Stylistics

In terms of stylistics, I want to be able to achieve a film/ experiment that is visually striking and as creative as possible. For the visual aspect of this film/ experiment that will be observed by my audience, I have taken inspiration from artist Thomas Blanchard, who creates magical pieces of digital film using acrylic paint, milk, soap, glitter and soap. Something so simple yet visually striking and artistic.  This can be achieved by taking a plate/ bowl of milk and combining it with various colours of acrylic paint, soap, oil and glitter, will be able to create this magical effect. I also intent to utilise and explore professional lights and camera lens (macro and zoom), enabling myself to create a cinematic and abstract film of bright colours in motion.

I would also like to have my short abstract film/ experimental piece to be screened as an event in a dark empty room on a wall or projector screen. After talking to Stacey Trodden (event administrator), Square 1 would be the perfect venue. However, in terms of contingency plan, my second option would be the Tank (TV studio). At the event, I would like to start off filming footage of myself setting up the room. This can be done with a Go Pro as it has the ability to shoot in wide angle. I would then like to get shots of my participants walking in, sitting down and capturing their reactions whilst they watch the artistic film. This will be followed by a short sit down interview to reveal how the film provoked their emotion or mood and what meaning they possibly gave to the colours. I had gained this idea from the YouTube channel named ‘The Fine Brothers Entertainment’, who purely make a living from filming people’s reactions on various different topics.

Instead of showing the video on a small laptop screen, based on my research, I believe it will be a good idea to enlarge the scale to a big wall or projector. In relation to this, I will use a sound stereo system which can also influence the participants mood and emotion as may feel like a cinema experience. I also aim to some use of the audio from the interviews as a voiceover on the final project video.

In terms of editing style and narrative, I aim to edit all the footage together as the process of the project develops. This will start from a montage of myself setting up the room and shots of participants entering the scene. As my participants are watching, cuts of the video being screened will appear to show the audience what my participants are observing and hearing. As the video continues, I also aim to show cuts of my participant’s interview to reveal what they thought, what emotions were provoked and how their mood had changed.
